Come in – we’re open right now!
Common Ground is a speciality coffee shop in the heart of Altrincham. We also serve tea, soft drinks, alcohol and fine food.
Common Ground is owned and run by three Olympic athletes – swimmer Fran Halsall, BMX rider Liam Phillips and track cyclist Jess Varnish.
Meet the owners . . .
Liam Phillips, Jessica Varnish & Francesca Halsall. Three Olympic athletes that share a passion for sport and speciality coffee! Having relocated to Cheshire to pursue our sporting careers, our downtime would be spent in various coffee shops & specifically the highly acclaimed Altrincham Market. It was there, just after the Rio Olympics, that we became aware of an empty unit on Shaws Road that we believed could be a fantastic location for a speciality coffee shop. Although the premises needed huge renovation, we decided to take the plunge.
We set about creating a space that was inspired by years of travel whilst competing for Great Britain, before sharing our ideas and passion for coffee with baristas in Manchester. We were able to recruit a team of baristas that were excited about our ‘no compromise’ approach to making incredible coffee. After months of planning and a few weeks of construction, Common Ground was starting to take shape. The hunt for a chef was still ongoing. We were looking for an aspirational, passionate chef who was keen to use seasonal produce to create a fun and tasty brunch menu inspired by the Australian café culture. Having found the person we were looking for, the team was complete!
Welcome to Common Ground . . .
Caravan Coffee Roasters
Their goal is to showcase the care, craft and hard work of the coffee’s producer; whether this is an individual farmer, a washing station or a cooperative; they are the intrinsic link in the sensory chain. Caravan Roastery use Probat roasters and cropster roasting technology to carefully monitor the roast curve, development time and total roast time. By controlling these factors and understanding the raw material they can achieve varied degrees of flavour and profiles to bring out the best characteristics of every coffee they roast. By the end of a roasting week, after every batch has been quality tested, the green beans that began their journey in some of the most beautiful places on earth have been roasted with care and attention and will make their way to coffee drinkers at Common Ground.
